Ball clay is a fine-grained, highly plastic sedimentary clay. In a tile or sanitary-ware body it supplies the plasticity and the green strength that let a pressed or cast piece be handled before it is fired.
It contains more impurities than kaolin and fires to an off-white or cream colour, so a recipe balances the two: kaolin for whiteness, ball clay for workability.
