In double firing, or bicottura, the body is fired first into a biscuit. The glaze is applied to the biscuit and fixed in a second, lower-temperature firing.
The method suits brilliant colours, deep gloss and delicate decoration, and remains in use for some wall tiles and for hand-decorated ware. It uses more energy and handling than single firing.
