An engobe is a clay-based slip applied to the tile before the glaze. It hides the colour of the body, evens out the surface and helps the glaze and the body expand and contract together.
A second engobe is often applied to the back of the tile. It keeps the tile from sticking to the rollers of the kiln and leaves the pattern of dots or stripes seen on the underside.
