A frit is a glass produced by melting raw materials together and quenching the melt in water, which shatters it into granules. The granules are then ground and used as a main ingredient of glazes.
Fritting locks soluble or hazardous raw materials into an insoluble glass and gives the glaze a predictable melting behaviour. That predictability is what fast firing cycles depend on.
