The joint between tiles absorbs small differences in size, lets the surface move slightly without stress, and keeps water and dirt out once it is filled with grout.

Its width depends on the tile. Rectified tiles allow narrow joints; tiles with natural edges, extruded tiles and outdoor areas need wider ones. Laying tiles with no joint at all is not recommended.
