Mosaic is made of small pieces, usually a few centimetres across, in ceramic, porcelain, glass or stone. The pieces are supplied mounted on mesh or paper sheets of around 30 × 30 cm so that they can be laid quickly and evenly.

Because the pieces are small, mosaic follows curves and slopes that a large tile cannot: shower floors, niches, columns and pools. The many joints also add grip underfoot.
