The PEI rating, named after the Porcelain Enamel Institute, classes glazed tiles by resistance to surface abrasion. The test in ISO 10545-7 rotates an abrasive load on the glaze and records the number of revolutions at which wear becomes visible.

  • Class 1: very light traffic, such as bathrooms used barefoot.
  • Class 2: light traffic in living areas.
  • Class 3: moderate traffic throughout a home.
  • Class 4: heavy traffic, including entrances and shops.
  • Class 5: very heavy traffic; the tile must also pass a stain test.

The rating applies to glazed tiles only. Unglazed tiles are tested for deep abrasion under ISO 10545-6.
