Tiles shrink in the kiln, and not all by exactly the same amount. Rectification grinds the edges of the fired tile with diamond wheels so that every piece has the same dimensions and square, straight sides.

Rectified tiles can be laid with narrow joints, often about 2 mm, for a near-continuous surface. The precise edges also demand a flat substrate: any unevenness shows.
