A roller kiln is a long tunnel in which tiles move in a single layer on rotating ceramic rollers. Burners above and below the tiles heat both faces evenly.

The tile passes through preheating, firing and cooling zones, each held at its own temperature. Because the load is thin and uniform, the whole cycle is short, and the kiln runs without interruption.
