The raw materials of a tile body are ground with water into a slip. In the spray dryer the slip is atomised into a tower of hot air, where each droplet dries in seconds into a small, hollow granule.
The resulting powder holds about 5 to 7% moisture and flows like dry sand. It fills the press mould evenly, which is what makes tiles of consistent density and size possible.
