Terracotta, Italian for baked earth, is made from clay rich in iron oxide, fired at roughly 900 to 1,050 °C. The iron gives the red to brown colour; the low firing temperature leaves the body porous.

Terracotta floor tiles, known as cotto, are valued for their warm, uneven surface. Because they absorb water and stains, they are normally sealed after laying and maintained with suitable treatments.
