20 mm porcelain pavers are made for terraces, paths and pool surrounds. The same paver can be laid in three quite different ways, and the choice depends on what lies underneath and how the area is used.

On pedestals

Adjustable pedestals hold each paver at its corners over a waterproofed roof or deck. The surface stays level and water drains through the open joints. Check the manufacturer’s load and span data, and whether edges need extra support.

On gravel or sand

Laid on a compacted, levelled bed of gravel or sand, pavers suit gardens and paths, and can be lifted and relaid. The joints can stay open or be filled with sand; the bed has to be well compacted so that no paver rocks.

Bonded to a slab

Where vehicles or heavy loads cross, or where a continuous surface is wanted, pavers are bonded to a concrete slab with an adhesive made for outdoor use and full coverage, with falls built into the slab and movement joints.

Whatever the method

  • Frost resistance (ISO 10545-12) where it freezes.
  • Slip resistance suited to wet and barefoot use near pools.
  • Falls, so that water leaves the surface.
  • Pavers from one batch, with spares kept for repairs.
